First Year:
Many People Have this doubt what should I learn first in order to start my cybersecurity career, Even I had this doubt when I was a beginner, but after good research, I came to know what to do first, and I will share my journey now.
1) Learning Hardware
People may wonder why should I learn hardware in order to study cybersecurity, this will give you a basic idea about how computer works, how you can assemble and configure a PC, especially this will be useful when you come across networking concepts and a part of defensive security, this will be a very important topic. The good thing about hardware is, that it’s not difficult to learn.
How can you Study Hardware?
- The best way is via YouTube first
- As part of the practical session, you can learn via simulation
- If you want, you can buy some low-cost equipment and try to build one
2) Learning Programming Language:
The second thing you need to learn in your first year is to learn any programming language, if you come into the cyber security domain, I would recommend you study one of the following languages.
- Python (First preference)
- Go
- Bash
Even in your university, you will be learning programming language, I would recommend that would be enough, the main reason you need programming language in cyber security is to automate any process and to develop tools.
If you need any recommended courses, I would recommend 50 days of Python by Dr Anglyne, available in udemy.
Second Year:
Okay, now you have learned hardware and programming language, what can you learn in your second year? Just follow this.
1) Learning Networking Concepts
What should I learn here? The first thing is you will be learning these networking concepts in your university, apart from this, you should have a basic idea such as how request and response works, the TCP IP model, Ports and protocols and many more things if you want you can see this following youtube video to know basic of networking.
Networking Course-
2) Learning Linux OS
You need to be fluent when it comes to working with Linux OS, you will be working in Kali Linux or Parrot OS, and once you are good with it, you will be promoted as a script kiddie because, when you know how to play with Linux, you can install tools via GitHub and you can play with it. If you want to learn Linux, you can see my Linux course provided by me (free).

Third Year:
1) Learning CyberSecurity by Completing CEH
If you wonder what CEH is, it’s called Certified Ethical Hacker, it’s a certification. I started my CEH journey in 3rd year and completed it within 6months, the reason why I Recommend doing CEH is that it covers the full basics of ethical hacking from A-Z, if you don’t know how to prepare, don’t worry I got your back, I have already posted my journey with a blog and video on how to clear CEH in 6 months only with free resources.
Youtube Link: https://youtu.be/f0yYRRHAKoo
Spend your third year only with CEH, take your time and prepare, probably you will need 5–6 Months as a noob to clear CEH, maximum 7Months.
Final Year
Okay, If you have completed CEH, you are 80% done with landing a job in your final year, now, you have a solid 14 -15 months (Based on when you complete CEH). OK, What to do next?
1) Learn Bug Bounty or Penetration Testing.
Before Starting, both bug bounty and penetration testing is the same, it’s a concept of finding bugs or flaws in website or apps, and if you are strong in this bug bounty, you can land on any of these jobs.
- Cyber security analysts
- VAPT (Vulnerability Assessment and Penetration Testing)
- Cyber security Engineer
- Penetration Tester
If you want to know more details about this bug bounty or penetration testing, kindly watch this blog and playlist.

Remember! The more valid bugs you find within these 15 month will reflect in your resume, you will be adding all the bugs you found in your resume. Once you are good in bug bounty, you can place in your university placements, you don’t need to search for jobs off campus.
