Consider you are using a PC with a hard disk, and you are storing the following files in your hard disk.

A — Photo

B — Video

C — PDF

D — MP3 (Music)

E — PPT

Here, A, B, C, and D are called Clusters

Example

OK, What is a cluster? now let me explain with a diagram now. This is a part of Disk geometry. I don’t want to explain fully since it will cause confusion now, but this is how a disk looks inside.

Generally, a disk is divided into Tracks, sectors and clusters, this is where your files get saved. (like you can see each block). OK, now what happens when you delete a Music (D) from your hard disk?

Your Whole D cluster doesn’t get deleted. Instead, it deletes only the pointer of D, which means Cluster D indicates to the Pointer saying, my cluster is free, you can store any other files in that space now, which means your MP3 is still in that hard disk(cluster space)and recoverable, only the pointer is deleted, not your whole cluster.

So now you have deleted your MP3 from cluster-D, and now you are saving a new PPT. Now, the disk searches for a free pointer. If the pointer is assigned to Cluster D again, then your MP3 would be very difficult to recover, this is because you have overwritten the file from Cluster D, which means you have your Deleted MP3 in Cluster D since PPT comes again in the same cluster D, your MP3 becomes very difficult to recover.

Summary: So here, when your files get deleted, only your pointer gets deleted, and when you save other files, it will be overwritten in that same cluster. That’s why experts say that don’t create a new file after deleting the file; it will overwrite it, so It is hard to recover again.
